Facts About The Nerve System

From the desk of Michael Tannenbaum, D.C., a Chiropractor in Ann Arbor.

A primary focus for Chiropractors is the health of the nerve system. As Chiropractors we believe that if one's nerve system is not functioning properly then one will not be truly healthy. With this in mind,Chiropractors attempt to make sure the nerve system functions as close to 100% as possible so that the bodies health can be as close to 100% as possible. Below I've listed some facts (hopefully, some are fun facts) about the nerve system.

The nerve system is densely packed and highly complex structure of nerves that sends and transports signals throughout the body to coordinate and control the body. It is the body's electrical wiring system.

The nerve system of humans is made up of the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).The CNS is made up of the brain, spinal cord and retina of the eyes. PNS includes all other nerve system structures that are peripheral (outside of) to the CNS and connects the CNS to all areas of the body.

Nerves are enclosed bundles of long fibers called axons which are made up of nerve cells. There are two types of nerve cells, neurons and glial cells.

Glial cells help hold or glue things together in nerves and neurons send fast and precise electric/chemical signals to other cells in the body and including to the brain.

There are approximately 100 billion neurons in the human brain and 13.5 million neurons in the human spinal chord. If these neurons were lined up abutting each other they would stretch 600 miles

The nerve system can send signals at speeds of 100 meters per second.

Damage to nerves can result in intense pain, loss of feeling, and/or loss of muscle control.

A newborns brain increases in size about 3 times during its first year.

As we age the brain loses about one gram of weight each year.

The surface area of the brain is approximately 25,000 square centimeters.
