Health Conditions Chiropractors Can Treat

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.: Health Conditions Chiropractors Can Treat

I’m often asked by my Ann Arbor chiropractic office patients if someone with a particular health condition should avoid being treated using chiropractic. The conditions I most often get asked about are osteoporosis, post (or after) spinal surgery, and spinal column degeneration.

Here’s how I answer my Ann Arbor chiropractic patients.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the body’s bone density in less than normal. This generally seen in people older than 50 or who have a health issue that causes the condition. Osteoporosis occurs when the normal physiological production of layers of bone does not work at a normal rate, and so the density of the bone decreases. People with osteoporosis have an increased chance of bone fracture and breakage.

Chiropractors are trained to treat people with osteoporosis. Chiropractors understand that different degrees of osteoporosis require different approaches to chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors sometimes use tools that emit a light force to treat people with osteoporosis. The bottom line – a chiropractor can safely and effectively treat those with osteoporosis.

Spine degeneration is a condition that is more often seen in people over 40 years of age, but it can occur at any age. Some forms of spinal degeneration are also called “arthritis of the spine” or “degenerative disc disease.” Chiropractors are trained to treat people with spinal degeneration, and people with this condition generally will benefit from the treatment. Chiropractors understand that chiropractic treatments can help slow the degenerative process of, and relieve the pain associated with, spinal degeneration. The bottom line here is that chiropractic treatments for people with spinal degeneration are safe and effective.

Have had or about to have spinal surgery: Chiropractors can treat people who have had or are about to have spinal surgery. Chiropractors generally treat these patients using very gentle techniques, and they understand that there are certain people in this group that they cannot treat.
