Vitamin D and Dementia

From The Desk of Ann Arbor Chiropractor, Michael Tannenbaum, D.C.

A Study completed by the University of Exter Medical School and led by Dr. David Llwelleyn and reported in the August 6, 2014 edition of Neurology showed that adults that where moderately deficient in vitamin D had a 53% increased risk of dementia and those severely low in vitamin D had a 125% increased risk of dementia. This study looked at 1658 persons 65 years old and older. With this study in mind and due to the fact that dementia is so prevalent in our society, we must be vigilant that we are doing those things that makes sure we are consuming an adequate amount of vitamin D. Because the elderly's skin may not absorb and convert sunlight into vitamin D as easily as younger people's skin the elderly need to be especially vigilant about consuming those foods and/or supplements that give them the proper dosage of vitamin D.

Of course, along with making sure you have enough vitamin D in your diet you should incorporate regular chiropractic care as a way to reduced pain, reduce stress a ultimately achieve a healthier life.
