What Is Chiropractic?

From The Desk of Ann Arbor Chiropractor, Dr. Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

Chiropractic is the science of studying misalignment of spinal bones, studying the health consequences of the misalignment and the study of the proper methodology of returning the misaligned bones to their proper position. Chiropractic is also the art of reducing, correcting and preventing spinal bone misalignment thus allowing the tissues, organs and systems of the body to function as close to %100 as possible. Lastly, chiropractic is the philosophy of life and health that believes that all living things have a natural (innate) ability to grow to their full potential as long as there is no interference to this natural ability.

Another way to explain Chiropractic is that the brain and nerve system directly or indirectly control all body functions (the function of all the bodies tissues organs and systems), and with this in mind Chiropractic works to maintain the health of the nerve system so that the body can function at as close to %100 as possible. In addition, the bodies ability to heal itself is important factor in how chiropractors approach trying to help the body function at it's fullest potential. Chiropractors believe that, due to the fact that the spinal column houses and protects the spinal cord and the nerve roots coming off the spinal chord, if there is trauma or wear and tear or even congenital abnormalities to the spinal column then the spinal bones may interfere with the nerve system causing one to experience pain, discomfort and ill health.

Lastly, chiropractic treatments consist of gently adjusting the bones in one's spine and extremities (hands, feet, arms, etc.,) and possibly recommendations of particular stretches, exercise and lifestyle changes. Lastly, chiropractors are trained to know when a patients condition warrants that the patient be referred to a different health care specialist.
