Children and Chiropractic

From the Desk of Ann Arbor Chiropractor, Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

There is no question in my mind that children should be adjusted by a chiropractor, and it should take place soon after birth. This will give the child a better chance to experience a healthy and happy life. Scientist have shown that the birth process can result in significant trauma/injury to the newborn. So, in attempt to reverse the affect of this trauma, the infant should go to a chiropractor to have his/her spine and extremities evaluated for and then adjusted for any misalignment. If the bones and joints are not realigned the child will likely experience long-term negative consequences. There are various studies that back this up. The research paper written in 1984 by Faix, M.D. and Donn, M.D. “Immediate Management of the Traumatized Infant” states that in 1981 the sixth leading cause of neonatal mortality in the U.S. was due to birth trauma. Faix and Donn went on to say that “Many more (birth traumas) do not result infant death but may still significantly affect neurodevelopmental outcomes.” They go on to say, that there are multiple case reports of severe birth trauma following “normal spontaneous delivery”. Some of the injuries that can occur are injuries to the cervical spine (neck bones), clavicle fractures, injuries to the arm and shoulder joints, facial nerve palsy, and other types of nerve damage. Furthermore, Faix and Donn state that “ It is still true the most dangerous journey some people will ever undertake is from the womb to the outside world.” So, as I stated earlier, to help facilitate a life of health and happiness children should be checked and treated by a chiropractor for bone misalignment (subluxations) soon after birth.
