Sciatica

~~Sciatica is defined as pain traveling down one or both legs generally in the  posterior aspect of the leg and the pain can travel into your feet and toes. The pain is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is one of the longest and widest in the body and begins in your low back. Sciatic pain may start slowly and progressively become worse over time and is sometimes associated with low back pain or pelvis pain. Often the pain is worse at night, when standing, walking, sneezing or coughing. The pain is often described as burning, aching, noticeable muscle weakness and tingling, pins and needles in the toes and feet.

Sciatica is diagnosed via your chiropractor taking a thorough patient health history including understanding what activities cause the pain, reflex tests, orthopedic tests, muscles strength tests and possibly some sort of imaging study(s).

Sciatica should be initially treated conservatively. Chiropractic has been shown to be a very affective conservative technique for  treating sciatica. At Tannenbaum Chiropractic we have great success  treating sciatica using Diversified Chiropractic Technique (non invasive spinal manipulative technique) and providing appropriate stretching exercises.
