Chiropractic Helps Athletic Performance

~~From the desk of Ann Arbor Chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

I treat weekend warrior athletes, high school and college athletes, and professional athletes at my Ann Arbor, Michigan, office and many come to me because they have heard that athletic performance improves with chiropractic care. Others have heard that chiropractic care can help them recover faster from injuries then other forms of care and help prevent injuries.

Below, I've listed some studies, which demonstrate that the benefits of chiropractic can translate to improved athletic performance. All of the studies are from peer-reviewed journals.

Botelho, M. B., & Andrade, B. B. (2012). Effect of cervical spine manipulative therapy on judo athletes’ grip strength. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 35(1), 38-44.
These researchers found that cervical spine (neck) adjustments increased grip strength.

Brolinson, P. G., Smolka, M., Rogers, M., Sukpraprut, S., Goforth, M. W., Tilley, G., & Doolan, K. P. (2012). Precompetition manipulative treatment and performance among Virginia Tech athletes during 2 consecutive football seasons: A preliminary, retrospective report. Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, 112, 607-15.
This study suggests that overall football playing performance is enhanced by spinal manipulation.

Sandell, J., Palmgren, P. J., & Björndahl, L. (2008). Effect of chiropractic treatment on hip extension ability and running velocity among young male running athletes. Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, 7(2), 39-4.
These researchers’ results suggest that chiropractic treatment for hip extension can help increase the speed at which athletes run.

Smith, D. L., & Cox, R. H.  (2000). Muscular strength and chiropractic: Theoretical mechanisms and health implications. Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, 3(4), 1-13.
This study suggests that chiropractic can 1. Positively impact three major components that increase muscle       strength: neural, bio mechanical and muscle. 2. Positively impact the neurological flow of information in the body  which can improve the capabilities of muscles and the cardiovascular system. 3. Reduce fixated joints.

Finally, many studies demonstrate the efficacy of chiropractic in getting rid of neck pain, mid-back pain and low back pain. Also, chiropractic has been shown to be effective in getting rid of shoulder pain, shoulder blade pain, and pain in the extremities (the arms, legs, feet, hands, knees and elbows). In addition, there is evidence that chiropractic improves reaction time.

Thus, the bottom line is that chiropractic care can potentially improve athletic performance.
