Can Chiropractors Reduce Shoulder Pain?

~~Here is another blog post from Ann Arbor based chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C. (If you have any questions about headaches, neck pain, back pain or chiropractic Dr. Mike can be contacted at [email protected].)

Often people show up at my Ann Arbor chiropractic office with complaints of the shoulder. The complaints range from general shoulder pain to a stiff shoulder joint that doesn't allow the patient to raise their arm to pain in deep in the shoulder to shoulder blade pain. Part of the reason there such a variety of shoulder problems is that the shoulder joint is a very complicated, it is the most complicated joint in the body.

The shoulder joint is made of 20 different muscles, 15 different nerves and 3 different bones. Because of its complexity the shoulder can have a large number of problems and it is why the shoulder is often difficult to treat. Some of the basic reasons shoulders become injured are sports injuries, overuse injuries, muscle imbalance and poor posture.

Chiropractors are often successful treating shoulder injuries (and of course, without the use of drugs or surgery). Chiropractors have the knowledge and skill to treat what is generally the three main causes of shoulder problems which are muscle or tendon issues, nerve irritation and bone joint misalignment. Often adjusting the neck can help resolve shoulder injuries. This is due to the complex relationship between the nerves, bones and muscles in the neck and the shoulder areas. Practicing in Ann Arbor I often find that people with shoulder problems have shoulder girdle (shoulder and shoulder blade) have moved forward i.e., misaligned anteriorly This leads to imbalance in the shoulder area causing stress in the shoulder joint that can cause nerve irritation and or tendon/muscle problems within the shoulder joint. Simply here, moving the shoulder girdle back into its proper position will often resolve the shoulder problem.
