Reasons People Have Back Pain

~~What are the most common reasons people experience back pain?

Most adults experience back pain at one point or another during their life.  Back pain symptoms vary somewhat from person to person and the pain can vary from dull/achy pain to sharp stabbing pain pain to burning pain. The pain can be accompanied by stiffness and possibly radiating  pain into the pelvis and legs. So, what are the most common reasons people experience back pain.

-Using improper lifting technique. Many people don't know how to properly lift things. Thus, many people injure themselves when lifting. There are volumes written on proper lifting technique, the basics, however, are to keep the item your lifting in front of you, bend your knees to pick up the item, make sure the item is as close to as possible (don't reach out to pick up item), make sure to lift with both arms equally, keep back straight when lifting and when lifting push through your quadriceps muscles. Most chiropractors should be able to teach you proper lifting techniques.

-Wear and tear overtime. A common reason for back pain is, simply, time plus how much wear and tear your back/spine has expereinced. For example, certain types of work cause more wear and tear on the spine then other types of work and the older your are the more likely you are to experience back pain. Chiropractors can help with wear and tear and age related back pain. At our Ann Arbor chiropractic office we often treat people with wear and tear and time related back pain.

-Trauma causes back pain. Simply, if you have trauma to your back you will likely have short and or long-term back pain. For example, physical trauma from a high impact car accident or a hard hit in the back in tackle football often result in back pain in the short and possibly the long-term.

-People with poor posture often experience back pain in the long and short run. Poor posture can result from a number of things, such as, weak core strength to poor self image, but the bottom line is that poor posture puts pressure on the joints of the spine that can result in back pain. Chiropractors should be able to suggest ways to improve your posture. At our Ann Arbor chiropractic office we regularly work with people to improve their posture.

-Misalignment of the spinal joints causes back pain. This can be explained very simply as bones out of place pinch nerves causing pain, but it can be a very complex physiological issue that science has yet to fully understand. Misalignment of spinal joints result from many of the things we have talked about above such as poor posture, trauma, and wear and tear, but simply misalignment of the spinal  joints often cause back pain. Chiropractors work to put the spinal joint into proper alignment in order to relieve back pain and make people healthier.
