Stress: How To Manage It

This blog post is presented by Dr. Mike Tannenbaum, D.C. of Tannenbaum Chiropractic, LLC

Stress: We all experience it. Is it an inevitable part of our life? Yes, however, we can and need, for the sake of our health, to control it. It is well known that stress if unmanaged can cause all kinds of  illnesses and disease. Stress may cause among other things, high cholesterol and high blood pressure which can lead to heart disease (the number one killer of people in the U.S), a compromised immune system (which can cause people to catch colds and other illnesses), headaches, inflammation of organs of the body and joints, insomnia, depression, mood swings and digestive issues. The key to avoiding these illnesses as they relate to stress is to manage the stress. That is, if one is able to control/manage stress, it will not be nearly as detrimental to your health as if it is not managed.

So, how do we control/manage stress? At our chiropractic office in Ann Arbor the following are some of the suggestions we make to manage stress.

  • Get enough sleep. 7.5 to 8 hours a night works well for most people.
  • Make time for hobbies and things you are interested in.
  • Make sure you maintain a healthy diet. Avoid sugar and alcohol.
  • Spend time with people you love and enjoy being around.
  • Get regular exercise.
  • Find a way to mentally relax. You might try yoga or meditation.
  • Keep a positive attitude and have confidence in yourself.
  • Simply, avoid things that would likely cause you more stress.
