Posture-It's Important To Your Health

Ann Arbor based chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C., presents another blog post: “Posture-It's Important To Your Health.”

I attended the Michigan Association of Chiropractors conference last weekend and with the plethora of scientific information disseminated, sophisticated jargon used and complicated studies discussed one basic thing I took from the conference was that good posture is extremely important to one's health. Good posture has a direct correlation to good health and increased life span. Good posture isn't just about looking poised and professional, it's more importantly, about good health. It can generally be assumed that someone with good posture has good health.

Studies demonstrate that poor posture among other negative repercussions increases the likelihood of cardiovascular disease, digestive problems, decreases life expectancy, can lead to chronic back and neck pain, chronic headaches, chronic stiffness and an increase in the likelihood of having varicose veins.

I tell my patients at my chiropractic office in Ann Arbor that proper posture when standing is when your ears are above your shoulders, your shoulders above your hips and your hips above your ankles. Of course, proper sitting posture is as important as proper standing posture. Proper sitting posture while at work is only accomplished if your work station is set up to allow you to work with your body in proper posture. Also, one should minimize the time they sit while at work. In previous blog posts I have written about work station set-up and sitting/standing while at work.

Proper posture doesn't just play a part in how you look, but more importantly, it plays a part in your health. Poor posture really does impact how you feel physically, your quality of life and ultimately how long you live.
