Subluxation: What Is It?

The word “subluxation” is not well known other then by chiropractors or those who are familiar with chiropractic. Subluxation is an extremely important concept in chiropractic because the very basic goal of chiropractors is to rid the body of subluxations. Chiropractors are trained in the art, science and philosophy of removing subluxations.

So, what is a subluxation? It is a misalignment of a vertebrae in the spine relative to a vertebrae above or below it. Generally, the word subluxation assumes that when bones are misaligned nerve or nerves that are near the misaligned vertebrae are stressed usually by pinching or stretching of the nerve(s).

So, what occurs if one has a subluxation?

1. The body becomes less healthy. Because the subluxation causes nerves to be pinched or stretched, the nerve signals that are carried by those nerves change. The change in a nerve signal causes the organs, tissues or systems of the body that the signal is directed towards to not function as it should and thus, the body is less healthy.

2. Causes a series of steps or phases to take place that ultimately cause the bones and joints of the body to degenerate faster and in a more pronounced way then if the vertebrae were not subluxated. Ultimately, this process causes pain, stiffness, poor posture and ill health.

At Tannenbaum Chiropractic in Ann Arbor all day, most days of the week, we treat people by removing subluxations in an attempt to get these people to as close to 100% healthy as possible. Chiropractors are the only health care providers trained in the science, art and philosophy of removing subluxations. Chiropractors go through years of training in human anatomy, including spinal anatomy and nerve system anatomy to become experts in the removal of subluxations.

Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to remove subuxations. The basic technique chiropractors use is to put a quick impulse with a specific direction and torque into the misaligned joint.
