Chiropractic and Pregnancy

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor, Mike Tannenbaum D.C.

I'm often asked at my Ann Arbor Chiropractic office, “Is chiropractic a good tool to ensure a healthful pregnancy?” This is my answer:

Chiropractic can be a great addition to the things a women does to have a healthful and fulfilling pregnancy. It's well known that maintaining a healthy diet and hydration; getting moderate exercise and having prenatal check-ups are all important parts of a healthy pregnancy, but many people don't know that chiropractic during pregnancy has been shown to increase the chances of  a healthful pregnancy.

As a pregnancy progresses, many changes take place in the woman’s body. One general change is seen in her back and pelvis. (The pelvis is the group of bones connecting the back and the legs.) The arch in the low back increases and the pelvic joints move to accommodate the growing baby and the upcoming birth process. Chiropractic care can be very beneficial here, as chiropractic can help reduce the aches and pains that often accompany these changes. It can also help reduce the possible complications during the birth process.

The American Pregnancy Association lists a number of potential benefits of using chiropractic during pregnancy.

-Maintaining a healthier pregnancy

-Controlling symptoms of nausea

-Shortening the duration of labor and birth

-Relieving back, neck or joint pain

-Preventing a potential cesarean birth

In summary, chiropractic is a safe and very effective tool to help promote a healthy and fulfilling pregnancy. If you want to learn more about the efficacy of chiropractic during pregnancy, a good place to start is the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website.
