Anxiety and What We Tell Our Patients

Another blog from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

Anxiety disorder afflicts at least 40 million Americans. It is the most common mental disorder diagnosed in the U.S. Anxiety makes life difficult for millions. Anxiety is triggered by many things, but the symptoms of anxiety are fairly similar from person to person. Anxiety causes, for no better words, a “knotted” mind/thinking and a “knot” in the chest.

Here are some natural remedies we suggest to our patients at our Ann Arbor chiropractic office to help dampen the symptoms of anxiety.

Exercise – of course, exercise. It's been shown that physically active people have lower rates of anxiety and depression.

Sunlight. 15 minutes of natural sunlight a day helps the body produce enough vitamin D that can help prevent or reduce anxiety, and boost mood in general.

Eating a well-balanced, low inflammatory diet. For example, a diet that avoids processed foods, sugar, trans-fats, and additives. You should consume plenty of protein and vegetables. The protein you consume should be lean, carbohydrates should be unrefined, and the fats should be “healthy fats.” You want the food in your diet to have plenty of vitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, and calcium.

Some supplements and pure essential oils that have been shown to reduce anxiety are:

Supplements

Kava root

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Vitamin B complex

Vitamin D3

Omega-3 fatty acids

Magnesium

Pure Essential Oils

Lavender oil

Chamomile oil

Of course, you should do your own research on these before deciding to use them.

Finally, you want to have regular chiropractic treatments, as a healthy nerve system and musculoskeletal system will create a life with less anxiety.
