Interesting Facts About Chiropractic

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

Even though many benefit from chiropractic treatments, and chiropractic is a very important and effective form of health care, many people don't know some of the fun and interesting facts about chiropractic. Some of these facts are listed below. Enjoy!

Chiropractic means “done by hand.” The word “chiropractic” comes from the Greek words cheir, meaning “hand,” and praktos, meaning “done.” The founder of chiropractic, Daniel David Palmer, chose the name chiropractic. He is known in the chiropractic world as D. D. Palmer.

There are over 95,000 chiropractors throughout the world. Most days of the week there are over 1,000,000 chiropractic adjustments given. In the U.S., doctors of chiropractic give over 35,000,000 adjustments yearly.

Chiropractic is recognized and legally regulated in over 40 countries.

D.D. Palmer gave the first-ever chiropractic adjustment to a man named Harvey Lillard in Davenport, Iowa. Mr. Lillard had lost most of his hearing 17 years earlier and D.D. Palmer thought he could help restore Mr. Lillard's hearing with chiropractic – and indeed that's what happened. After the chiropractic treatment, Mr. Lillard said, “I can now hear the horses walking in the street.”

Someone injured on the job is 28 times less likely to have surgery if they see a chiropractor as the first point of contact than if they see a surgeon.

All professional football teams employ a chiropractor to enhance player performance. Many professional athletes use the services provided by chiropractors.

Chiropractic patients are healthier than those who don't use chiropractic. A seven-year study1 tracked patients who used a chiropractor as their primary health intervention, and it was shown that these patients had 83% lower pharmaceutical costs, 62% fewer outpatient surgeries, 60% fewer hospital admissions, and 59% fewer days in the hospital.
