How To Explain Chiropractic

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

On occasion, at my Ann Arbor chiropractic office, a patient asks me, “How can I explain chiropractic to people so that I can refer them to you, or just to explain chiropractic in general and share some of its benefits?”

First, you could explain the basic anatomy and function of the spine and spinal cord, as these are central to chiropractic. You might say, “The brain has all the information in it to control the function of the body, and this information is communicated/transported through the spinal cord (as nerve impulses) and then out to all the tissues organs and systems of the body via the nerve roots and nerves of the body. More specifically, the spinal column (made up of spinal bones) houses and protects the spinal cord. Nerves roots (bundles of nerves) come off the spinal cord, running between adjacent spinal bones and splitting into millions of nerves that travel through the body transporting the nerve impulses to all the body’s tissues, organs, and systems, so the body can function as it should.”

Next, you might want to explain, “Where chiropractic fits in here is that chiropractic works to make sure the information from the brain, which travels through the spinal cord, nerve roots, and nerves, is transported to the body’s organs, systems, and tissues without interference. Simply, it is known that interference to the nerve system – and thus, to the nerve impulses – causes ill health to the body (from mild to serious ill health), and chiropractic works to prevent improper transmission of nerve impulses, thus keeping the body healthy, allowing the body to reach its potential.”

To continue here, you would want to explain that: “Chiropractors are highly trained in the art and science of diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal system and nerve system problems (chiropractors have many years of education). More specifically, chiropractors are trained in treating issues of the spine, and in how the spine relates to the health of the musculoskeletal and nerve systems.”

Finally, you could finish with: “Chiropractic treatments have been found to be very effective in treating back and neck pain, headaches, and a variety of other musculoskeletal system issues without the use of drugs or surgery, and chiropractic has been shown to be very cost effective.”
