A Chiropractor's Suggestion On Ways to Avoid Back Pain

Another blog post form Ann Arbor, Michigan chiropractor, Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.: A Chiropractor’s Suggestion on Ways to Avoid Back Pain

Back pain is a problem for many in the U. S and around the world. Just in the last three months, approximately 60 million Americans have been affected by back pain. The negative financial impact from back pain is huge, costing around $90 billion annually in medical and non-medical related expenses.

Below are some ways to avoid back pain. If you follow them, they can help you keep your medical costs down and keep yourself healthier.

Maintain core strength

That is, maintain the strength of the muscles attached to your pelvis and the surrounding muscles – for example, the hamstring, quadriceps, and external and internal oblique muscles and those muscles that makes up the abdominal wall. Yoga, Pilates, and weight lifting can all help strengthen these muscles.

Maintain flexibility

Maintain the flexibility of all the core muscles, as well as other major muscles in your body. If muscles are too tight, they are more likely to become injured and are more likely to cause the bones attached to them to misalign. Yoga and/or stretching exercises can be helpful here.

Chiropractic care

Chiropractic care is paramount here. Chiropractic effectively helps maintain proper bone alignment, nervous system function, sensory function, and other body physiology necessary to prevent back pain.

Proper posture

Maintain proper posture while standing, doing physical work – such as when gardening and weightlifting – and when sitting – such as when working at a desk or eating a meal.

Maintain proper weight

If you are overweight or obese, you are more likely to have back pain.

Use a proper bed and pillow for sleeping

Make sure your bed, including the pillow you use for head and neck support, are not causing undue back stress. Generally, a good quality, firm mattress and a thinner pillow are best for reducing the chance of back pain. Also, the ideal sleep position is on your back, and the most likely position to cause back pain is on your stomach.
