Processed Sugar Is Bad For You

~~This blog post is from the office of Ann Arbor Chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C. In our Ann Arbor office we focus on helping people get rid of headaches, neck pain, back pain and tingling and numbness in the arms and legs.

As you probably know processed sugars are bad for you, but you may not know why they are bad for you. Basically, your body doesn't recognize processed sugars (processed carbohydrates). When ingesting them you pull nutrients from your body. For example, you pull nutrients from bones, muscles and brain tissue. These nutrients are pulled away as the bodies way of metabolizing the processed sugars.

Here are some negative affects if consuming processed sugars:
Promotes fat storage, that leads to all kinds of problems including high blood pressure, diabetes and weight gain.
Promotes parasites and fungus which can promote fatigue and joint pain.
Promotes fluid retention
Promotes difficulty concentrating
Promotes tooth decay
Promotes depression/anxiety

By the way your body is configured to be able to process the sugars that you consume when eating fruits and vegetables. Also, there are a number of sugars/sweeteners out there that are not bad for you to consume in moderation. For example Stevia and Xilitol are sugars that are naturally occurring in fruits and vegetables and don't promote an increase in blood sugar. Some other “good” sugars are honey, argave, and maple syrup.

As a side note, many of my patients tell me that due to cutting down their processed sugar consumption their back pain, neck pain headaches, and general stiffness have diminished considerably or disappeared completely.
