Chiropractic and Middle Ear Infections

As a chiropractor I'm occasionally asked if chiropractic can help rid middle ear infections found in children. This is the answer I give my patients that come to my Ann Arbor office. Middle ear infections are one of the most often occurring infections in children. They can cause a great deal of pain. The most common prescribed remedy for middle ear infections is a course of antibiotics. Most people don't know however, that there is another very effective and non drug approach to stopping middle ear infections and that is chiropractic. Particular chiropractic adjustments work to open up the Eustachian tube that is in the middle ear allowing the fluid that accumulated in the ear, due to the infection, to dissipate. The removal of the fluid diminishes the pressure in the middle ear that was causing the pain and allows the infection to quickly run its course.

In addition, I tell my patients in Ann Arbor, there has been a study that has compared the efficacy of chiropractic care to drug treatment for middle ear infections. The study was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Some of the finding in the study were that with chiropractic care 93% of cases of middle ear infections improved, of those, 75% improved in ten days or less and 43% improved with one to two chiropractic treatments. One interesting result was that generally those participants in the study who had no history of antibiotic use where on average cured the fastest with chiropractic treatment. This means, and one of the basic findings of the study, is that, children with limited exposure to allopathic care and an increase in chiropractic care are more likely to see a faster decrease in the symptoms of a middle ear infection.
