Chiropractic and Sciatica

Sciatica: most of us have heard of it. Likely many of us have experienced it. The symptoms generally are close to constant pain, often extending from the low back down one leg and possibly into the foot and the big toe. In addition, muscle weakness in the back, legs or buttocks are possible. The pain can be severe, making walking and or sitting difficult. At Tannenbaum Chiropractic in Ann Arbor we regularly successfully treat sciatica.

The sciatic nerve itself is really a term for a series of five contiguous nerves that together are called the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve begins near the junction of the fifth lumbar bone (lowest bone in the spine) and the sacrum (a bone in the middle and posterior aspect of the pelvis) and runs through a muscle in the buttocks called the piriformis muscle, then travels into the leg, bottom of the foot and then into the big toe. At our Ann Arbor chiropractic office we see people with pain that radiates through out the sciatic nerve or in a particular part of the nerve. Sciatica results from nerve impingement at different places along the nerves path.

Sciatica is more likely to occur in people who are obese, the elderly and people with herniated disks (herniation of the cartilage between spinal bones). Also, misaligned bones in the spine and or pelvis are generally found in people that are experiencing sciatica.

Chiropractic has been shown to be very effective in treating sciatica. As mentioned earlier, we regularly

successfully treat people for sciatica at our chiropractic office in Ann Arbor. Furthermore, a number of studies support chiropractic as an effective tool in treating sciatica.
