Pesticides in Fruits and Vegetables

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

I'm occasionally asked, at my Ann Arbor chiropractic office, what are the fruits and vegetables that contain the most pesticides and what are those that carry the least. First, I tell my patients that you want to try to avoid all pesticides, and one way to help with this is to eat organically grown fruits and vegetables. Next, I let my patients know about the organization Environmental Working Group (EWG). It's a nonprofit group that promotes awareness of the levels of toxicity in our environment. Listed on their website¹ؚ٫² are12 fruits and vegetables that have been found to contain the highest amounts of pesticides and 15 of the most popular 48 foods tested that have been found to contain the least amount of pesticides. Below are the lists.

The 12 with the highest amount of pesticides:

Strawberries

Cucumbers

Peaches

Cherries

Celery

Grapes

Spinach

Cherry tomatoes

Tomatoes

Sweet bell peppers

Nectarines

Apples

The 15 with the least amount of pesticides:

Sweet corn

Asparagus

Cauliflower

Papaya

Grapefruit

Onion

Pineapple

Kiwi

Honeydew melon

Eggplant

Cabbage

Avocado

Cantaloupe

Frozen sweet peas

Mango

Pesticides can cause all kinds of illness, including cancer. With this in mind, I highly recommend that you avoid pesticides as much as possible.
