Water Hydration

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.: Water Consumption

Summer is around the corner, so let's talk about keeping your body hydrated, specifically how much water you should consume to keep your body healthy. Below are some of the things I tell my patients in my Ann Arbor chiropractic office.

Opinions abound on the amount of water one should consume on a daily basis. Among those who study water consumption, many recommend what is called the “8 X 8 rule,” which means that you should consume eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. The 8 X 8 rule is a good general guide; however, if you consume foods with high water content – as found in some fruits and vegetables – you can assume you’re getting some water in your diet that way, too. Also, if you’re sweating a lot due to exercising or the work you do, you may need to up your water intake.

Most of us know that it's important to your overall health to have enough water in your diet, but I don't think many of us know some of the specific benefits of sufficient water intake. Listed here are some of those benefits.

1. Toxins in your organs, systems and tissues are cleansed more easily, and nutrients are more readily transported to the cells of your body.

2. Your energy level increases, and you are more able to focus and concentrate.

3. Your hunger level decreases and your metabolism increases.

4. Weight loss is easier because by-products of fat breakdown are removed more easily;

5. You can reduce or eliminate headaches. Your brain needs water! Without enough water, your brain can become dehydrated, causing a headache.

6. Your mood may be enhanced. According to various studies, there is a direct correlation between maintaining a better mood and consuming adequate water.

7. Help maintain healthy-looking skin. Dehydration can make your skin look dry and wrinkled.
