Aging and Chiropractic

Another blog post from Ann Arbor Chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.

Aging – yes, we all do it. It’s a natural process that we go through our entire life. As we get older, the aging process moves us in the direction of declining physical and mental ability. Our joints begin to show wear and tear, we experience declining senses, and our organs may not function as well.

Even though we all age, life expectancy around the world is increasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 1880 to 2012, the life expectancy of Americans has just about doubled. Because of longer life expectancy and due to the baby boomer generation, we have a large number of people turning 65 (10,000 a day, on average).

Even though more people are living longer, elders experience a disproportionate number of health issues when compared with the rest of the population. Below are some of the health conditions commonly faced by people 65 and older:

  • Vision and eye ailments

  • Arthritis

  • Heart disease

  • Osteoporosis

  • Mental health changes

  • Cancer

  • Respiratory disease

Another major cause of injury for elders is falls. Falls for those over 65 have been shown to result in moderate to severe injuries in about 25% of the cases. These injuries often include bone fractures, cuts, and head trauma.

At our Ann Arbor chiropractic office, we let our patients know that chiropractic has been shown to help with preventive care for the elderly and help ailments often experienced by elders, such as neck pain, back pain, and shoulder pain, among other musculoskeletal pain. Chiropractic has been shown to help people with their balance; declining balance is an especially serious issue for those over 65. In addition, chiropractic has been shown to help individuals improve their mental and emotional health.

Chiropractic is a preventive, noninvasive, nonsurgical, nonpharmaceutical/nonmedication-based approach to healthcare, and should be used by everybody, including elders.
