Chiropractor Suggests Simple Effective Exercise

Another blog post from Ann Arbor Chiropractor, Mike Tannenbaum, D.C., owner and operator of Tannenbaum Chiropractic, LLC.

At Tannenbaum Chiropractic in Ann Arbor, patients occasionally ask us what is a simple exercise that is easy to accomplish, relatively easy on the body, relatively inexpensive to perform and, of course, has health benefits.

Our answer to this is: walking. Walking is easy to do (for most of us), for example, versus running. It doesn’t require a gym membership, is relatively easy on the body compared with many sports, and is relatively inexpensive. The only athletic gear required are some good walking shoes.

The National Institutes of Health explains that walking can increase your energy and mood, muscle tone and bone strength. It burns calories and lessens your likelihood of health conditions such as heart disease and type II diabetes.

When you are walking as a form of exercise, good walking shoes are essential. Without good walking shoes, you are more prone to injury. Make sure the shoes fit you well. Go to a store that sells walking shoes and get the staff to help fit the shoes to your feet. If you already have good quality walking shoes that fit you properly, make sure the shoes are in good condition and that the tread is not too worn.

Make sure to lightly stretch before your walk and stretch more thoroughly after the walk. If you aren’t in shape for walking as a form of exercise, slowly ramp up the distance and speed in which you walk as you get in better walking shape.
