An Ann Arbor Chiropractor's Take On Meditation

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.:

A Chiropractor's Take on Meditation.

Meditation … Sometimes when people hear this they think of a touchy-feely kind of thing that doesn't have any real benefits and is maybe even a waste of time. But, the reality is meditating has many scientifically proven benefits that – if done properly and regularly – can enhance your life in a number of ways including making your life more productive, healthful, and satisfying.

Studies have shown a number of benefits to meditating.

Meditation increases:

  • Immune function
  • Ability to regulate your emotions
  • Improves your ability to focus and concentrate.
  • Improves your ability to multitask
  • Improves your memory
  • Brain function

Meditation decreases:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation at the cellular level
  • Depression, anxiety, and stress

How to Meditate:

  1. The first thing to understand is that meditating is not very effective on a “one and done” basis. Instead, meditation takes some practice to get right, and generally is most effective when done repeatedly over days and months.
  2. Set up the environment in which you’re going to meditate to be conducive to meditating. That is, the environment should be calm and relaxed. Ideally, a quiet, dimly lit space where you can shut the door to keep out distractions.
  3. Make sure you are sitting comfortably in a chair or on a cushion or mat, and that you are maintaining good posture.
  4. There are a number of styles of meditation and techniques that go along with each style. You'll need to investigate what style fits your needs and interests and get instructions and how to master the meditation style you prefer.

No matter what you may have heard or thought of meditation, I think it's worth giving it a try. Science has shown that it has many benefits.
