A Chiropractor’s Take on Poor Posture

Another blog post from Ann Arbor chiropractor Mike Tannenbaum, D.C.: A Chiropractor’s Take on Poor Posture.

Your posture can give insight into your body’s structural health. That is, if your posture is not what it should be, then likely you have misalignment of bones in your body. This misalignment can cause you ill health, including excessive degeneration of your bones. Chiropractors are experts in analyzing your posture and using this analysis to help you improve your posture and, in turn, improve your health.

To check your posture – something I do with most new patients at my Ann Arbor chiropractic office –

  1. Stand in front of a mirror with your shoes off

  2. Relax your body and close your eyes

  3. Take a few steps in place

  4. Shake your hands for a couple of seconds

  5. Open your eyes

The posture you see in the mirror, after going through this process, should be your true posture. You may notice, for example, that one shoulder is lower than the other. With this in mind, you might look to see if the opposite side hip is leaning the opposite way. If that is the case, you may then look to see that your torso is leaning towards that side with the lower shoulder.

After performing this sort of analysis with patients at our Ann Arbor chiropractic office, we know to look for misaligned bones that are causing structural issues. Those areas that show poor posture are likely the parts of your musculoskeletal system that we will notice are now exhibiting, or eventually will exhibit, the greatest health issues.

Chiropractors work to improve their patient’s posture and thus the patient’s near-term and long-term health. As an aside, studies have shown that the better one’s posture is, the longer one lives.

In conclusion, to have your posture analyzed, you should go to a chiropractor. The chiropractor can then work with you to improve your posture and thus improve your health.
